A big network of hicking trails covers the area: about one hundred of them are signaled by Club Alpino Italiano and other long distance itineraries have been prepared by Comunità Montane, like Garfagnana Trekking, Apuane Trekking, Lunigiana Trekking or Alta Via delle Apuane. Before going along every route, it is advisable to buy detailed maps, to check the accessibility of the route and the weather conditions. In Lunigiana, in the natural parks of Appennino Tosco Emiliano, of the Alpi Apuane, but also in the coastal parks of Cinque Terre, Monte Marcello and of Portofino there are many possibilities to do mountain bike’s excursion. Very interesting is the service “train+bike” offered by FS; this service is available for the railway Lucca-Aulla and others of the coast. With this service you can do the itinerary and then return at the point you started in by train. In the area there are several horse schools with rings where you can go for quiet and pleasant horse rides and where your children can be accompanied by a riding instructor. Some of them organized horse excursions in close contact with nature in the Appennino Tosco-Emiliano, Apuan Alps, in Lunigiana or Garfagnana. The Apuan Alps represent the most important and known karst area of Europe. The karst complex of Monte Corchia with its 55 Kms of galleries and wells recalls the attention of the experts. There are three apuan caves open to the tourists; you can also visit other caves of easy and medium difficulty, with the help of the Guides Park specialized in speleology. In Garfagnana do not miss the Grotte del Vento and in Liguria the Grotte di Toirano and of Balzi Rossi. Parco Fosdinovo, Parco della Val di Vara, Parco del Buffardello are three Adventure Parks where acrobatic forest paths linking platforms at different heights in the forests test your ability with suspension bridges, swinging beams, vertical nets, ropes and obstacles. It is unique opportunity to sail a fishing-boat, tofeel the emotions of an activity of ancient origins, to learn about fishery, the traditional techniques, to observe the fish, the landscapes, the places and the habits, the scents and the flavours of a culture based on the sea and its resources.
Sailing/Rubber dinghy trip
Along all the sea coast you can find several sailing clubs with sailing schools which offer courses at different levels and durations for adults and children. They also offer the possibility to rent a boat or a rubber dinghy with or without crew on board of which you can explore the coast, Cinque Terre and the Liguria coast and reach creeks and beaches reachable only by sea.
Everywhere in the sea localities of the coast there is the possibility to make diving excursions or to rent the necessary equipment. The most famous scuba diving sites are those in the park of Porto Venere or in San Fruttuoso or in Cinque Terre
In Versilia, Marina di Carrara or Sarzana you can attend surfing classes where you can learn the basics of this sport, how to behave safely in the water and to how to stay on the surfboard.
In Massa there is a swimming pool complex which comprises of an indoor pool of 25 mt, an olimpionic outdoor pool of 50mt, a children pool, a solarium where to relax, and a beach volley court. You can find many gyms in the area where to keep fit or then to relax with sauna, a massage and a solarium. In Montignoso
you can play tennis at the Tennis Club Il Cinquale,
