This valley, near to important urban areas like Lucca, Pisa, Florence and Versilia, preserved through time, its history culture and environment. Garfagnana literally means Great Forests and luxuriant forests still today welcome the visitors of this quit part of Tuscany. Chestnut forests planted by man till 1000m of altitude, and beach forests wild and tangled which reach over 1700 meters of altitude. The territory of Garfagnana includes the valley of the river Serchio and it lies between the magnificent ‘marble mountains’ of the Alpi Apuane and the beautiful rolling ‘spine of Italy’, the Apennines. Thanks to its rich traditions, unspoiled places and history, Garfagnana is a paradise for hikers: the hiking trail net is well signed and maintained by CAI (Italian Alpin Club) and the Comunità Montana.

Also there are many possibilities to enjoy this land by bike: all the trains on the train line Aulla- Lucca allow the transport of your bike giving the possibility to make long trip without the problem of going back to the starting point. You just need a train time table, a map of trails and some organization. The interesting places to visit are many: the Grotta del Vento, The Wind Cave is open to public and there are three trails of different length, the Vagli Lake which is periodically emptied out revealing the ancient settlement of Fabbriche di Careggine, the town of Castelnuovo Garfagnana founded in the XII century with the Ariosto Fortress, Barga with its intact walls, Bagni di Lucca with the thermal baths, Borgo A Mozzano and its Devil's Bridge.
