The area

The geographical location of Il Piccolo Nido gives you easy access to a diverse range of fascinating locations such as the classic Tuscan towns of Lucca, Florence, and Siena, the region of Emilia Romagna with Bologna and Parma. Or you easily reach the beaches of Versilia in Forte dei Marmi or Viareggio for a perfect suntanning treatment, or you can discover by boat one of the islands of the Arcipelago Toscano such as Capraia or Gorgona. You can choose to travel trough time by visiting the Etruscan Coast in Maremma and the archaeological parks of Populonia and Baratti. If you get tired of archaeology you can always choose to swim and refresh in the blue water of the Baratti Gulf. And why not treat yourself with a day at the thermal spa of Venturina near Livorno or of Equi Terme in Lunigiana? Everywhere do not forget to taste the well known Tuscan cuisine.

This is probably the most famous region of Italy for tourists and travellers. Those who visit Italy for the first time often begin with Tuscany, attracted by its beauty, history, and wonderful works of art and architecture, in places such as Florence, Siena, Lucca, and Pisa. The closest to visit are Carrara and Massa. The city of Massa is of roman origins but it developed mainly in the Early Medieval time. It is dominated by its Castle
and has a beautiful cathedral with a marble facade. Around Massa place to visit are the villages of Resceto, Forno and Antona on the panoramic road to Passo della Fioba. In summer there are two famous historical reconstructions: the Quintana Cybea a Medieval parade with flag throwing and jousting tournament, and the Lizzatura, which shows the old way to transport the huge marble blocks from the quarries in the mountains down to the valley.

If you are in Massa, do not go away without tasting a delicious ice cream in via Roma, in the Oasi del Gelato shop! Carrara is the world capital of the Marble industry. It is a city with its own appeal because a little rebel. The centre is worth a visit with its Duomo. The marble quarries are interesting sites like those of Fantiscritti with a museum, or those you can visit from the outside like the one on the way to Colonnata.
